Bug reports, data corrections (a trail, parking lot or water spot that's wrong), and feature requests are all welcome. For a data correction, the place name and what you saw on the ground helps most.

Common questions

Does it work without cell service?
Yes. Trails, curated hikes, parking, regulations, huts, springs and elevation profiles are all built into the app. To use the map offline too, open the Downloads tab and download the basemap while you still have a connection. Weather and stream gauges need a connection.

Why does a recording need "Always" location access?
So your track keeps recording with the screen locked. Mossback only uses your location while a recording is running or when you save a waypoint, and it never leaves your phone.

Where does the data come from?
Trails, parking, hikes, closures and facilities come from the National Park Service's own published data. Elevation comes from USGS, weather from the National Weather Service, and the map from OpenStreetMap contributors. Swimming holes and fishing spots are community-reported and labeled that way in the app.

Is it legal to camp here?
The app shows the park's closure areas and camping rules, but it doesn't decide whether a particular spot is legal. Check the park's rules and your permit.

How do I move my hikes to another app?
Open a recorded hike or saved route and export it as GPX.
